performance on Saturday August 5, 2017
Below the text & photos & the article in the P.Z.C. [ the provincial newspaper ] you’ll find the catalogue of the performance of Jörn J. Burmester.
On Saturday, August 5 2017, from 9 till 5 I walked the streets of Middeburg, departing from ruimteCAESUUR.
The action
I pushed a little card loaded with 96 red signs, stencils and white spray paint. During the walk I marked each sign with one word that is associated with a specific fear people have, and placed the completed signs at locations throughout the city.
Fears were collected from encounters with citizens and visitors to Middelburg. Preparation included some days of research into collective traumatic experiences from the history of the city, possibly including the city’s involvement in the 17th century slave trade or the bombings and flooding of the city by German and Allied troops during World War II.
During the walk, while the load of signs got lighter, the trace of my way through the city got marked with the red signs. The route taken and the location of each sign were marked on a map of the city. The words on the signs were copied onto the map, as the original signs were left behind in the public space.
Each sign has a sticker on its back:
After the walk, remains of the action were placed at ruimteCAESUUR, including the city map, empty paint cans, the remeining signs, the paint smeared stencils, etc. This minimalistic exhibition will grow over the next few days, as people return signs, which will be included in the exhibition, while they are invited to discuss their experience with the work.
